Detailed overview
Harari builds Homo Deus as a sequel to the history of Sapiens: once famine, plague, and war have been converted from divine punishments into technical problems, the successful animal begins looking for a new agenda. The opening chapter moves through Beauvais in 1694, the Black Death, smallpox in Mexico and Hawaii, the World Health Organization's eradication campaign, the Great Leap Forward, obesity statistics, terrorist spectaculars, and Google's Calico project to show that modern power comes from treating catastrophe as something measurable, funded, engineered, and administered. The same move introduces the book's three future projects: life extension, biochemical happiness, and godlike upgrading.
The first part then turns backward and asks what kind of creature earned the power to set those projects. Harari refuses a heroic human story. He describes the Anthropocene through extinct megafauna, domesticated pigs and chickens, Nayaka animism, the Garden of Eden, Gadhimai sacrifices, Harlow's monkeys, and industrial meat production, making human supremacy look like a system for turning other sentient beings into raw material.
